The mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus) is a hardy shrub in the cashew family (Anacardiaceae). It is found in arid regions throughout the Mediterranean. Lentiscus is the old Latin name for the mastic tree.
The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of small branches with the fruits of Pistachio mastic.
Properties
A powerful remedy for relieving stagnation in the blood circulation, prostatic and lymphatic departments of the lymphatic system. Vasodilator effect. Regulator of the autonomic nervous system.
Indications and usesCirculation: varicose veins, heavy legs syndrome, external and internal hemorrhoids, reduction of edema, venous stasis, bedsores.
Digestive system: Treats stomach pain, ulcers, and diarrhea. Has a direct effect on the digestive glands.
Reproductive system: regulates vaginal discharge, reduces prostate congestion, stimulates sweat glands.
Respiratory system: expectorant, sinusitis: strong decongestant. In emphysema, restores blood circulation around the alveoli.
Dentistry: caries, gingivitis, pyorrhea, toothache.
For external use, dilute in a base oil at a concentration of 1% and apply to legs (varicose veins), swelling, and venous stasis.
As a mouthwash, add one drop of essential oil to water or pistachio mastic hydrolate.
For sinusitis, massage the mixture (pistachio mastic essential oil diluted to 0.5% in a base oil) into the sinuses.
