 In Central and South America, the name “Palo Santo” is used to refer to a wide variety of plants, so it is important to make sure that the product is actually derived from the correct plant (Bursera graveolens).
 Palo Santo essential oil is obtained by hydrodistillation of the wood of the plant that has become a tree. In Peru and Ecuador, the Machalilla National Park region has become the site of the cultivation of these endangered trees by small producers, which contributes to the economic development of the communities that live in this area. It is necessary to wait at least 10 years before the tree is cut down.
